Nine women elected to 13th Parliament

Nine women have been elected to the 13th Parliament. Of them, five are from the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and four from the United National Front (UNF).

 Sumedha G. Jayasena (Moneragala), Pavithra Wanniarachchi (Ratnapura), Anjan Umma (Gampaha), Sujatha Alahakoon (Matale) and Ferial Ashraff (Digamadulla) have been elected from the UPFA.

Meanwhile, Thalatha Athukorale, sister of former UNP General Secretary, the late Gamini Athukorale was elected for the first time from the Ratnapura district, while former Minister of Women's Affairs Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake gained entry from the Kurunegala district.

Chandrani Bandara, daughter of late Minister Chandra Bandara who entered Parliament for the first time in December 2001, was successful this time too contesting from Anuradhapura. Mary Larinne Perera, wife of former Fisheries Minister Festus Perera was elected from Puttalam district for the second time.

Another significant feature at the 2004 general election was that two women candidates from rival parties headed the preferential vote in the District from which they contested. Pavithra Wanniarachchi of the UPFA won 125,592 preferential votes while Thalatha Athukorale of the UNF obtained 113,617 preferential votes from the Ratnapura district.

Meanwhile, Sumedha G. Jayasena appointed Deputy Minister of Buddhasasana under the PA Government in 1994, won the third highest preferential votes (47,538) in the Moneragala district.

JVP's Anjan Umma, member of the earlier Parliament, notched up 111,755 preferential votes from the Gampaha district making her fourth in the list.Ferial Ashraff, wife of former Minister of Ports and Shipping, the late A.H.M. Ashraff obtained 52,223 preferential votes from Digamadulla occupying first position in the list.

Sujatha Alahakoon secured the highest number of preferential votes in the Matale district by gaining 57,234.

Chandrani Bandara obtained 49,471 preferential votes from Anuradhapura district, making her second in the list, Mary Larinne Perera scoring 36,846 preferential votes, being third in the list and Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake obtaining 46,725 preferential votes from Kurunegala district occupied the sixth place in the list.
