by Sarath Malalasekera The Legal Aid Foundation (LAF) of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka in coordination with the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs (HRDECA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Office in Colombo conducted its second countrywide essay competition for the GCE Advanced Level students. The theme of the essay was 'Performance of Duties will Ensure Protection of Rights'. When compared with the previous year, a large number of students took part in the essay competition this year. The LAF in coordination with the Ministry of HRDECA selected outstanding essays from among the total number of essays received and thereafter the selected essays in Sinhala, Tamil and English were scrutinized by a Court of Appeal Judge and two Senior Counsel. The essays which won the first, second and third places and another 50 essays which were qualified for consolation prizes totalling 60 were selected for awards. All the award winners received cash, gifts and certificates. The Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC was the Chief Guest at the Awards ceremony. The UNHCR (Colombo) Representatives Ms. Aurvasi Patel and Neill Wright also graced the occasion.
