Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake has thanked the President and Prime Minister for their co-operation in holding a free and fair election. The Commissioner also congratulated the IGP for the security cover provided and also to the Secretary Ministry of Defence, the three service Commanders and the armed services for extensive security cover for the election and logistical support. He said he also wished to place on record the active participation of civil society and Non-Governmental Organizations which had aspirations for a free and fair election. I have also allowed eight organisations including PAFFEREL and CMEV to conduct observations of their own. I am pleased with the role they played. I thank them all. "I am grateful to the Secretaries of Political Parties and Leaders of Independent Groups, their Agents and Candidates who extended their cooperation to the Returning Officers, the Election Staff and the Police Officers." "Further I wish to express my sincere thanks to all Secretaries of Ministries and all Heads of Departments/Corporations/Statutory Boards and Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils, Provincial Heads of Departments for the assistance rendered during the elections," the Commissioner stated. "Finally, I have a special thank to the whole public service of this country for their unstinted support to the Elections Department in concluding another election with dignity and the 9.2 million voters out of an electorate of 12.8 million, who showed much enthusiasm in turning up at the polling stations in time and co-operating with polling staff and the police to ensure a free and fair election".
