Creditable achievements for Etambagahawila factory by Bryan Baptist, Director, Bartleet Produce Marketing (Pvt) Ltd. The Etambagahawila Tea Factory is in the Galle district in a backdrop of lush green fields. In December 1996 Bandula Nanayakkara (its owner) purchased Etambahahawila. Barleet & Company Limited are the Brokers who handles sales and market Etambagahawila tea. Nanayakkara was determined to establish Etambagahawila as one of the best tea factories in Sri Lanka. It was an ambitious task. However in the first year he was successful in improving the factory average to Rs. 148.75 cts. This was a creditable achievement being the first year of operation. In 1998 this factory continued to obtain prices well above the Low Grown Elevation Average. During this time further improvements in the factory were done with new tea machinery and other inputs. Nanayakkara also owns four factories in the Galle district which are performing well. He trained his factory staff in tea manufacture and factory management at the National Institute of Plantation Management. In 2001 the factory average was Rs. 161.10 cts. In 2002 it rose to Rs. 176.78 cts and in 2003 advanced further to Rs. 196.25 cts. In January 2004 the Rs. 200 barrier was broken and Etambagahawila achieved its highest ever monthly average of Rs. 213.04 cts. But there was more to come. This factory's crowning glory was in February 2004 when Etambagahawila achieved a phenomenal average of Rs. 216.32 and this placed it No. 1 in Sri Lanka for Orthodox Tea Manufacture. "Etambahahawila's success is due to my dedicated and wonderful staff who are capably led by Tharanga Senaratne, my Group Superintendent, my Head Factory Officer, A. V. S. Jayampathy and all my other staff members. This is a disciplined and efficient team. I am proud of this achievement," Nanayakkara said. Nanayakkara is a modest personality and gives credit to his team at Etambagahawila. As his brokers, we at Bartleets know the great efforts made by him to establish the Etambagahawila factory as a producer of the finest quality tea in Sri Lanka. His investments are many where he introduced quality systems together with the latest machinery. The Rolling Room has the most advanced humidification system of controlling temperatures which is computerised. He has the latest Electronic Colour Separators and grading machinery. All these investments have borne fruit. Another vital person to Etambagahawila's success is Tharanga Senaratne, Group Superintendent of the factories. Bandula acquired his services at the correct time and appointed him Group Superintendent of all his factories. Senaratna is a dedicated and efficient person who has made a good contribution to Etambagahawila. The Factory Officer A. V. S. Jayampathy has also played a very important role. His hard work and determination also contributed in a large way to the success story of Etambagahawila. |
