Sri Lankan shooters to compete in South Africa

Sri Lanka will participate in the 6th International Metallic Silhouette World Championship. The event is scheduled to take place in Bloemfontein, South Africa from April 3-17. This is the second time that a team from the Sri Lanka Rifle Association will be competing at a World Championship.

The first occasion was when the team participated at the South African Nationals in 2003, at the same venue.

The sport of metallic Silhouette Shooting, or Silhuettas Metallicas, had its origin around 1914, when the rebel and strategist, Pancha Villa, and his men used to raid villages and ranches in the northern state of Chikupehua, Mexico. In 1948, the first match using Siluetas Metalicas took place in Mexico City.

The gunners still shot Turkeys, but metal ones now. The first rifle shoot was held in 1967. Riflemen brought the sport from Mexico to Arizona in 1972. Metallic Silhouette shooting was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1969 by Sarath de Zoysa of the Sports Shooting Association. Metallic Silhouette Shooting in Sri Lanka can be broadly categorised into two sub disciplines, namely small bore rifle and pistol and big bore rifle and pistol shooting. The Inaugural National Metallic Silhouette Shooting championship in Sri Lanka was held in 2002.

The team from Sri Lanka will participate in the following events in South Africa: Small Bore Silhouette Rifle Event, the Small Bore Light Rifle Event and the Junior Event.

The members of the team representing Sri Lanka are: Shanaka Perera, MacArther Gunaratne, Assela Premnath, Janaka Wickremasurendra, Benjamin Fernando and Capt. Thushara Daluwatte, Adrian Daniel, a 13-year-old student from the Asian International School will participate in the junior event.

Adrian established a new Sri Lanka record for Junior Small Bore Rifle and was placed Overall 16th, in the senior category, at the last National Metallic Silhouette Shooting Championship. The Manager of the team is Michael Daniel.
