News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Those voting for UNF can hope to have only half the Government - Zuhair A person voting for the Freedom Alliance will be voting for a full and complete Government while those voting for the UNF will be electing a party for only half the Government, because President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will continue to exercise the powers of the other half constitutionally, said M.M. Zuhair, President's Counsel and Freedom Alliance National List candidate. Addressing an election rally in support of Freedom Alliance candidates at Aluthgama in the Kalutara district, on Friday, he said: "Under our Constitution, President Kumaratunga has nearly 50 per cent of the powers of any government. The J.R. Jayewardene Constitution of 1978 gave the Executive President wide and extensive powers, equivalent to nearly half of the powers of any Government". Zuhair said UNPers throughout the country were noticeably frustrated of their own Constitution under which they cannot hope to have control, of a full Government, until the next Presidential election, which is another three years away. "They are so disillusioned that they have virtually given up hope because their votes stand devalued by 50 per cent unlike those voting for the Freedom Alliance who will enjoy a complete Government with full powers, required to develop the country expeditiously," Zuhair said. The meeting presided by Navi Hadjiar of Aluthgama was held in support for Freedom Alliance Kalutara district candidate Faleel Hadjiar of Beruwala. |
