Warakawe Dhammaloka Thera Kandy North Correspondent The Maha Sangha does not condone bhikkus, involvement in politics. Whatever the political ideologies they subscribe to, the Buddha Sasana and the Buddhist order should remain intact. It is incumbent on the high prelates to keep vigilance on bhikkhu politics, said Ven. Warakawe Dhammaloka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter in his anusasana delivered at the 38th anniversary of Kandy YMBA. The occasion was presided over by Ven. Ambanwelle Pannasekera Nayaka Thera, the Anunayake of the Malwatte Chapter. Ven. Dhammaloka Thera said it is Buddhism which preserved the identity of the Sinhala people. The identity of Sinhala society is fast deteriorating today due to foreign influence. It is incumbent on the parents to accustom their children to a Buddhist way of life bequeathed upon us by a proud history. If so why should we change our course? Immense damage is being done to Buddhism by religious fundamentalists. The Sangha as well as the laity should be alive to this peril. The bhikkus are duty bound to lead the country towards a better direction. Ven. Kolaeliye Sidartha Thera, Kandy YMBA President, M. P. Wijeratne, Secretary, Kapila Seneviratne, Treasurer, Sarath P. Gunatilleke and several others also spoke. Awards and certificates were presented to the students. |
