UNF privatisation hits Wildlife Department

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) has been issued with a quit notice to vacate its premises at Gregory's Road by March 31 since the premises has been sold to a private concern in a joint venture.

The premises owned by the Plantations Corporation under the Ministry of Plantation Industries and has been vested with the Government. The DWLC is occupying this premises paying a rental to the Plantations Corporation for the past several years.

Intensive discussions among the two departments resulted in an agreement where the DWLC was allowed to remain in the premises until their own new building was constructed in Battaramulla.

With the new deadline to the DWLC to vacate by the end of this month, they have to find new premises. The rental for the new premises in urban Kollupitiya will be Rs. 700,000 a month.

Officials feel that this demand by one Government corporation to another Government corporation to vacate State owned premises is inconceivable moreover pending an illegal sale of Government property where such sale has been legally prohibited.

Official sources said the premises occupied by the DWLC is an ideal location with ample garden space and trees to house animals brought after a raid till they are found alternate accommodation. The Kollupitiya premises sans trees and garden space and is not ideal to house an animal brought after a raid even for a few hours.

The DWLC's plea for permission to occupy the present premises until their new building is complete, has been refused. Officials feel that it is a waste of time and money to shift into a new rented premises until they could re-shift to their new building once construction is completed.

The DWLC has been informed by letter that the Plantations Corporation has obtained an advance for the land from the new owner and that they should vacate the premises by the end of this month.
