Election eve shocker

by Kumaradasa Jayasinghe

The Freedom Alliance Colombo district candidates have requested Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake to cancel the UNP nomination list for the Colombo district over the inclusion of Mohamed Shafeek Rajabdeen who has been convicted by the Courts.

Freedom Alliance candidates for the Colombo district Hanifa Izzak, Chandana Katriarachchi and Western Provincial Council Member Hector Bethmage have made this request from the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, along with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Lawyers' Association.

This was revealed yesterday at a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute with Hanifa Izzak, a Freedom Alliance candidate for the Colombo district, presiding.

Hanifa Izzak alleged that Mohamed Rajabdeen had undergone a two years imprisonment in West Germany in 1975.

He has been convicted by the West German courts for keeping narcotics with him. It was also alleged that he has been fined Rs. 5,000 by the Courts in June 2002 for illicit tapping of electricity for his residence in Nawala Road, Colombo 5.

In addition to this, Rajabdeen's wife has also filed a case (73/HCA) against him demanding maintenance at the Colombo District Court.

According to Hanifa Izzak, the International Police Organisation (Interpol) in 1975 has informed the Sri Lankan Police that his (Rajabdeen's) passport holding the number E 002917 was a forged one.

Though Sri Lankan law does not allow any individual to obtain passports under different names from time to time Rajabdeen had allegedly used passports under different names Mohamed Shafeek Rajabdeen (E 002917), Mohamed Rajabdeen Mohamed Shafeek (J 0236667) and under the name Mohamed Shafeek Mohamed Rajabdeen (J 0752698)

The SLFP Lawyers' Association was of the opinion that according to constitutional powers vested with the Elections Commissioner there is a possibility of cancelling the UNP nomination list for the Colombo district on or before the elections date.

If the UNP Colombo district nomination list was cancelled by the Commissioner the UNP leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will lose candidatureship for the Colombo district.

The other prominent UNP figures in the list are Milinda Moragoda, Ravi Karunanayake, Bandula Gunawardhana, M. H. Mohamed, Maharoof and Karunasena Kodituwakku.
