University opinion Poll says UFPA winning

An independent opinion poll researched by Dr. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Kelaniya states that the United People's Freedom Alliance is winning the April 2 General Election.

The Opinion Poll revealed that 55.3 % were of the view that the UPFA would win the election, as against 27.7 % for the UNP.

According to the survey the UPFA will win 108 of the seats while the UNF will win 63, the TNA 03 and others 22.

A districtwise analysis shows that the UPFA will win 5 seats and the UNF 2 in Digamudulla, UPFA 5, UNF 3 in Anuradhapura UPFA 5, UNF 3, Badulla UPFA 1, UNF 1, TNA 3, Batticaloa UPFA 12, UNF 5, Colombo UPFA 12, UNF 5, others 3, Galle UPFA 7, UNF 1, others 2, Gampaha UPFA 5, UNF 2, others 4, Hambantota UPFA 5, UNF 2, Jaffna UPFA -, UNF 1, others 8 , Kalutara UPFA 6, UNF 6, Kagalle UPFA 7, UNF 2, Kurunegala UPFA 10, UNF 5, Matale UPFA 3, UNF 2, Nuwara Eliya UPFA 3, UNF 4, Polonnaruwa UPFA 3, UNF 2, Ratnapura UPFA 7, UNF 3, Puttalam, UPFA 4, UNF 3, Trincomalee UPFA 1, UNF 3, Vanni UPFA 1, UNF 3, others 2. Total number of seats 196. UPFA 108, UNF 63, TNA 3, other 22.

This research reveals the attitudes of the whole society during the period commencing from the 25th of February 2004 to 03rd March 2004 when considering the problems and socio-political environment.

The survey was conducted in all 22 districts including the north and east.

* When selecting the sample for the research studies if the gender, age limit, diversification in the distribution of income, employment and the education level have been considered.

* Knowledge on the sociological aspect of the audience has been inquired through their media usage. It has been revealed that the majority of them have used television and radio and newspapers to obtain information.

* When inquiring the public opinion on present day issues following problems were highlighted in accordance with the priority basis.

Ethnic problem
Cost of living
Unemployment
Indefinite political background
Crimes

People in Wanni and Trincomalee districts have named the ethnic problem as their major issue.

Cost of living and the price of goods were the main issues in Puttalam, Ratnapura, Trincomalee, Moneragala, Matale, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Kandy, Hambantota, Galle, Gampaha, Colombo, Badulla, Batticaloa and Anuradhapura districts.

Water and power supply were the main issues in Jaffna and Ampara districts. People in the Polonnaruwa district claimed that problems relating to agriculture are the main issue in the district.

* Over 75 per cent were in favour of finding a negotiated settlement to the ethnic conflict through discussions to restore peace in the island with the joint efforts of the President and Prime Minister along with the LTTE and other parties.

* Over 70 per cent were not satisfied with the present day handling of the economy. It has been pointed out that corruption and management problems were the main reason towards this end.

* Majority of the public in the country have expressed agreement to the dissolution of parliament and take over of 3 ministries by the President.

* Around 10 to 15 per cent had no clear view regarding this matter.
