by Sarath Malalasekera The number of incidents related to threatening with firearms has increased during the last several weeks. IGP Indra de Silva yesterday directed all DIGs to take stern action against persons who violate the firearms ordinance and threaten the public with firearms. The IGP also had directed all Senior DIGs and DIGs to obtain assistance as and when required from the Armed Forces. Post nomination incidents of polls violence reached 1127 yesterday. According to the Police Elections Secretariat 888 of these incidents relate to election offences while 239 complaints pertained to Violation of Election Laws. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne is in charge of incidents related to Election Violence. DIG Gamini Navaratne is in charge of the Unit on Election Offences and DIG Mahinda Balasuriya is in charge of the Police Communication Centre. The UNP had made 308 complaints, PA 30, JVP 96, UPFA 418, SLMC 27, EPDP 14 and other parties 239. A majority of the complaints relate to death threats, the use of criminal force, abuse and offensive language, the Election Secretariat said. The highest number of incidents have been reported from Ampara numbering 76, Ratnapura 65, Aruradhapura 63, Matale 35, Negombo 22, Moneragala 19, Chilaw and Galle 51 complaints each. Other incidents have been reported from Batticaloa, Mawanella, Ampara, Negombo, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Kandy, Tangalle, Eheliyagoda, Kalmunai, Akuressa, Wattala, Matale, Wattegama, Nagoda-Galle, Welipenna, Walapone, Kegalle, Gampola, Gampaha, Kadawatha and the Nugegoda police areas. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne said that public assistance and cooperation during the election period are very important. The public could contact the nearest police station and supply information about trouble makers in the area. All Police stations have been directed to entertain complaints regarding the violation of election laws from all candidates and from the public. The OICs of the Police Stations have been instructed to communicate with the Police Election Secretariat daily, DIG Wickremaratne said. |
