Chennai outlet runs well: Hameedia to expand to SAARC region Hameedia intends opening out across India and is confident of opening stores in Bangalore, Mumbai and at least two other cities by the end of 2005. "The company is also exploring the possibilities of opening outlets in the SAARC region, namely Maldives, Pakistan and Bangladesh," Hameed said. Hameedia, Sri Lanka's menswear and retail giant put Sri Lanka on the global retail map when they opened their first overseas outlet in India at the Spencer Plaza in Chennai on Februay 26. The Sri Lanka Trade Centre which is at the Spencer Plaza is the first store to be opened under the Sri Lanka Export Development Board under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This enables Hameedia Stores to avail themselves of all duty free concessions. Managing Director, Hameediya, Fouzul Hameed thanked the EDB for having given Sri Lankan entrepreneurs an opportunity to expand overseas. "We will be selling our brands namely Lebond, Envoy and Signature and are going to be in a position to popularise local manufacturing expertise abroad," he said. Hameed said that he hoped that this would pave the way for other local entrepreneurs. He said that Hameedia prides themselves on selling only originals and added that any customer walking into a Hameedia store is assured of purchasing only original brands. Initially Hameedia India would cater only for men and will stock the range that is currently on sale in Sri Lanka. Staffed by Sri Lankans, Hameed said that Hameedia will be more than able to hold its own despite the fact that India is renowned for its garment and textile industry. "Our garments are on par with any premium brand that is manufactured in the international markets in terms of design, authenticity and value," he said. |
