Mixed economy is not a closed economy - Wimal Weerawansa

"The Freedom Alliance is dedicated to building a mixed economic system where local industrialists and entrepreneurs are provided the necessary support and guidance to enable them to compete on an equal footing with multinational companies," said Wimal Weerawansa, Propaganda Secretary of the JVP.

Weerawansa was addressing a meeting to brief the Muslim community on issues of interest and concern to the Muslims organised by the Muslim Study Circle at the Ranmuthu Hotel on Thursday (25.03.2004).

Weerawansa pointed out that mixed economic systems have been practised successfully in countries such as South Korea and Malaysia. He noted that this was the correct model for Sri Lanka as it is the type of economic system that has allowed countries to attain economic independence while safeguarding national sovereignty.

" A mixed economy is not a closed economy. It will bear greater resemblance to an open economic policy under a well managed mechanism which will ensure the security and safety of critical components of our local economic system while facilitating an increased level of global integration," he explained.

"The loss of economic independence and reliance on donor funding has left Sri Lanka crippled with a high burden of debt and at the mercy of large corporates who try to exploit the maximum from the island. These circumstances have been further exacerbated by the incompetence and inefficiencies of the present government leading to shameful acts on the global stage, such as the Sri Lankan government siding with the US on issues such as the US invasion of Iraq, despite the opposition to it by the world at large."

Weerawansa also said that he was aware of the malicious and childish rumours being spread by various parties to discredit the Freedom Alliance. These rumours, he pointed out, were centred on issues such as the closure of international schools, restrictions on the ownership of homes, vehicles, computers, etc. and categorically stated that such rumours were baseless.

On the issue of minority rights, he said that the Alliance was committed to uphold the rights of all minorities in the country. "We would like to remind you that it was the JVP that organised a mass protest against the US aggression in Iraq. We have also condemned the assassination of the Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin," he added.
