Twelve die in Maoist attacks KATHMANDU, Friday (AFP) Twelve people died in the latest attacks by Maoists fighting to overthrow Nepal's monarchy as the rebels torched a van carrying French tourists near a popular lookout point onto the Himalayas, police said Thursday. Armed rebels late Wednesday stopped the van near Daman, a resort which on clear days offers spectacular views of Mount Everest, forcing the two French tourists and the driver to get out before torching the vehicle, police said. No one was hurt. The Maoists have rarely struck at the tourism industry, a major revenue earner in the impoverished kingdom, in the course of their eight-year insurgency which has claimed more than 9,500 lives. |
