Over 3,000 students obtain eight "A" passes at O/L

The GCE O\L results released by the Examinations Department this week indicated that 3038 candidates obtained "A" passes for all eight subjects.

Female students have done better than males, with 1,726 females obtaining all As in the Sinhala medium. Only 980 boys obtained all A's at the exam in the Sinhala medium. In the Tamil medium, 211 females and 122 males obtained eight A's.

According to the Examinations Department sources, 262,233 school candidates sat for the exam and 120,529 candidates qualified to follow GCE A\L studies. It is a percentage of 46.04.

Meanwhile, 26,423 school candidates who offered six subjects or more failed each subject. It is a percentage of 10.08.

A total of 9248 candidates who offered less than six subjects have not passed any subject which is a percentage of 3.53. The sources said 102,364 candidates have passed six subjects or more including Language and Mathematics.

This is a percentage of 39.10. Last year it was only 36.49 per cent.

W. M. Sachith Wijeratne, a student of Maliyadeva Boys School in Kurunegala has scored the first place among the top ten students who have scored the highest marks at the GCE O\L Examination results released this week, Commissioner General of Examinations, W.A.M Wijesiri said.

According to the Examinations Department sources, following are the top ten scorers at the GCE O\L examination in 2003: Harsha Anuruddhika Dissanayake of Nalanda Vidyalaya, Colombo, M. Savinda Kalhara Cooray of Royal College, Colombo, Thusitha Niroshana Chandrapala of Royal College, Colombo, W.R.S.M. Rakitha Hikkgoda of Kingswood College, Kandy, Darshana Kugadas of Wembedy Girls School in Jaffna, Nilupuli Mahathanthrige of Southlands Girls College in Galle, Charutha Lasitha Senaratne of Ananda College, Colombo, M.P. Subodhika Manelgama of Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy, Manuda Thiyunuwan Herath of Royal College, Colombo and P.A. Chanya Dinithi Padmaperuma of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.`
