' Gini Meda Sakmana ' starts shooting in May

"Gini Meda Sakmana" a film focusing on the country's prolonged war will commence shooting shortly.

Directed by Christy Shelton Fernando, the film is centred on the crisis faced by ordinary persons due to the war. The film is woven around a disabled youth named Mahesh living in a village in the North.

The film will discuss how young Mahesh is subjected to interference and pressure from both the state and anti-Government groups. Being a musician, Mahesh is harassed by both sides. He believes that he could escape the torment by leaving the country.

"I wanted to highlight how the lives of ordinary people are affected by war," co-producer Ranjith Perera (Winson Films) told the Daily News.

He explained that in our films, only the two parties involved in the war are featured. "The untold suffering and hardships experienced by non-combatants remain untouched though there is a large scope for such themes," added Ranjith.

Ranjith says the film will be shot both in Sri Lanka and abroad - mostly in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

"The shooting is scheduled to commence in May."

Stressing that there is a great potential in the international market for local films, Ranjith says attention should be focused on producing films catering to this demand as it would help to uplift the local film industry.

The film stars Sanath Gunathilake, Ravindra Randeniya, Joe Abeywickrema, Nadeeka Gunasekara and Wasantha Moragoda. Music is by Sarath Wickremage.

The film is co-produced by the National Film Corporation and Winson Films. Ranjith's Winson Film earlier produced two films namely Sanda Madala and Thahanam Gaha.
