Indo-Pak officials open border talks to spur peace process

LAHORE, Pakistan, Thursday (AFP) Pakistani and Indian border officials opened talks as part of a dialogue agreed between the two countries to resolve all their outstanding issues, officials said.

"All border matters will be discussed during the three-day meeting," a government official said of the meeting, held at the Wagah border post near the eastern city of Lahore.

"The two sides will work out plans to coordinate efforts to curb crossborder smuggling of narcotics and consumer goods," the official said, requesting anonymity.

Inspector General of India's Border Security Force (BSF), J.S. Gill, is leading his country's delegation at the three day talks with the Pakistani side, headed by Major General Hussain Mehdi of the Pakistan Rangers.

The official said the meeting would also discuss a proposal to return villagers caught straying into the other's territory by mistake, instead of sending them to jail for trial. Foreign office spokesman Masood Khan told AFP the border meeting was "part of the composite dialogue" already agreed between the two countries last month.

Pakistani and Indian foreign secretaries at their first meeting in two years agreed in February to start dialogue on all issues, including the disputed Kashmir region, in May or June.
