Academy for Educational Development of USAID funded study shows:

President Kumaratunga best suited to run country

Academy for Educational Development (AED) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded study released yesterday states that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is best suited to run the country.

The Report presents the basic findings the first wave of a three waves study that is being conducted in March 2004.

Prof. William Mishler of the University of Arizona, USA and Prof. Steven Finkel of University of Virginia, USA was responsible in designing the Survey Tool. The survey shows that 34 percent of the respondents were of the view that President Kumaratunga is best suited to run the country, while 29 percent favored Ranil Wickremesinghe.

According to the survey President Kumaratunga's majority lies with the Sinhala community, while Ranil Wickremesinghe was most popular among the Tamil, Upcountry Tamil and Muslim communities. 23 percent favoured neither.

A small group of UNF supporters feel that Mrs. Kumaratunga is best suited to run the country.

Furthermore she appears to have a slight majority over Mr. Wickremesinghe amidst the undecided voters.

The AED survey states with regards their personal economic situation, (63.2 per cent were dissatisfied with the UNF administration. Fifty nine per cent were of the view that it has got worse under the UNF Government, while 17 per cent felt it has improved.

With regards UNF Government's overall performance 44 per cent were of the view that it had done a bad job and 38.6 per cent that it had done a gaood one. 51.3% said the UNF Government had good job in drawing international support and 62.7% were of the view that the UNF done a good job with regards the peace process.

60.6% said the UNF Government had done a bad job in combating corruption .75.3 % said it had done a bad job in reducing unemployment. 72.5% that it had done a bad job in preserving law and order. A comparative survey of the UNF and the UPFA reveals that people clearly believe the UNF has been the better party to handle the peace process.

UPFA scores higher than the UNF on the ability to reduce the cost of living, reduce unemployment, provide health and education, combat corruption and preserve law and order.

The survey reveals 61.6% state that the Cost of living is the most important issue concerning them on a daily basis.

43% are for abolition of the Executive Presidency, 37% neither agree nor disagree, 20% are for the Executive Presidency.

Reduction in the price of essential goods 55.2%

The maintenance of the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA): 43.38%

Re-commencement of the peace talks 21.2%

A comparative survey of the UNF and UPFA reveals that people clearly believe the UNF has been the better party to handle the Peace Process.

29% Ranil Wickremesinghe (Most popular amongst Tamil, Upcountry Tamil and Muslim Communities).
