Sri Lankan children, community groups and NGOs will participate in the Global Action Week for Education to raise their concerns about children's issues and to highlight recommendations to ensure every child's right to a quality education. The Global Action Week to be held from April 19 to 25 is organised by the Global Campaign for Education and will be held worldwide under the theme, Missing: an Education. It will provide a global forum for children's voices. The following activities will be conducted in Sri Lanka with the support of education networks to mark the week: * On April 20 over 300 child advocates of education rights from all over the country will convene at the BMICH to address national leaders, civil society and children on pressing issues in education that are affecting them and their friends. * During the week of April 19 to 25 children in all provinces of Sri Lanka will be taking politicians "back to school" specially in underprivileged areas to show them their schools and talk about the reasons why children are out of school and why they are not receiving a quality education. * Children will also organise a nationwide postcard-writing campaign to tell the President to "please do more to give every child the chance to go to school and get a quality education". It is estimated that over 200,000 children will write postcards to the President. |
