by Wasantha Ramanayake Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) programs will be featured in Dialog GSM services including Zero077 Live, GPRS based TV streaming and video streaming services on their third generation (3G) trail system. Rupavahini Chairman Harim Pieris and Dialog Chief Executive Officer Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya exchanged the documents in this regard at a media gathering in Colombo on Wednesday. Pieris said SLRC was the leader in the electronic media. "SLRC news is the most watched news program in the island. Since the President allowed private news telecasting rights in 1994 Rupavahini was able to compete with them and stay on top," he said. Peiris said the Rupavahini Sinhala News bulletin at 8 p.m. enjoyed the viewership of over three million. He said the agreement between SLRC and Dialog GSM was a model partnership between the public sector and private sector institutions. Dr. Wijayasuriya considered the agreement as a pioneering step by two giants in their respective fields. He praised SLRC for the due recognition it had given to the new generation mobile telephony. "We are proud to be associated with SLRC-Sri Lanka's television giant that has taken another pioneering step in recognising new generation mobile telephony as a medium for the future," Dr. Wijayasuriya said. Initially around 400,000 Dialog GSM subscribers could view news, financial information, sports updates and weather forecast provided by SLRC in text format at every minute, free of charge, through the Zer077 Live facility, Head of Corporate Finance and Internet Business of Dialog GSM Thivanka Rangala said. "Although most subscribers could use their existing phone, they should change their SIM Cards," he said. Rangala said subscribers could use 2.5 G TV on Your Phone service which would allow them to watch television TV on the phone. However, the service has its limitations. "You can't watch a teledrama, but you can watch news-in- brief i.e. video clips of short durations. This would only cost eight or nine rupees per minute, but you have to get a new SIM card," he said. Rangala said in future, Third Generation (3G) subscribers would have the opportunity to view most Rupavahini programs on mobile phones, without limitation. SLRC Director General Dhammika Ranatunga and SLRC Deputy Director General (News) Anjali Senevirathne were also present. |
