Sunday's Kinross six-mile sea swim sees 55 entries

The 40th annual open six-mile sea swim of the Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club takes place on Sunday 28 at 7.30 a.m. at Wellawatte.

It is being organised and conducted by the Kinross Club and sponsored by the Bank of Ceylon as in the recent past years.

This was revealed to the media at a briefing held at the club on Tuesday by the General Secretary of the Club, Victor Pieris and the club President S. Nagendra.

According to Pieris and the Vice President (Swimming) M.H.S.M. Mackie, there will be around fifty five swimmers, 53 men and 2 women of 16 years and above, competing from 7 clubs affiliated to the NAASU viz, Sri Lanka Air Force, Panadura Aquatic Club, Thurstan Swimming Club, Peterite Swimming Club, Sri Lanka Navy, Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club and the Dolphin Aquatic Club.

Each club is entitled to enter a maximum of 15 men and 10 women for the event. In addition there will be two schools taking part. They are: Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda and St. Joseph's College, Colombo.

The six-mile sea swim commences this Sunday at 7.30 on a course that stretches from the Wellawatte Kinross Club sea front to Mount Lavinia and back.

The duration of the course is around 41/2 hours and those finishing after this will not be awarded points. The swimmers will have patrol boats in front and in the rear, with a doctor in attendance. The course will have two check points.

The team that emerged champions in the year 2002 with 121 points, the Police, due to exigence of service are not taking part this year. The team that won last year was the Dolphin Aquatic Club with 150 points.

The winner of the six-mile sea swim last year in the men's category was Ajith Kumara from the Dolphin Aquatic Club and the women's winner was Pushpa Chandani also of the Dolphin Aquatic Club.

The other swimmers who have given of their best in the recent past are Ajith Weerakkody, Anusha Kumara, Ishan Eranga, Prasanna Peiris and J.V. Ruwan whilst in the women those apart from Chandani who have impressed are Ramachandran Krishani, R.J. Jayakody, Thakshila Daluwatte and yet others.

The Public Relations Manager Bank of Ceylon Channa de Silva who was presnet to hand over the sponsorship cheque said the chief guest at the six-mile sea swim would be the Deputy General Manger Bank of Ceylon Bernard Fernando.

The Awards on offer are: M.G. Sirimanne Challenge Trophy for the men's winner, John Roche Challenge Trophy for the women's winner, Turab A. Jafferjee Challenge Trophy for the winning men's team, Guy Thiedeman Challenge Trophy for the winning women's team, Maharaja Challenge Trophy for youngest swimmer to complete the course and Tissa Ariyaratne Challenge Trophy for oldest swimmer to complete the course.
