Alliance has no clear policy: PM

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking on the eve of his 55th birthday said Tuesday, the Freedom Alliance members panicked when the peace process was getting successful fearing that their political future over.

"That was the reason Parliament was dissolved. The Alliance does not have a clear policy to carry out the peace process to find a lasting solution," he told rallies in Piliyandala and Mount Lavinia.

"No party has come forward with a clear strategy to find a solution to the ethnic problem other than the UNP. We were successful in getting the LTTE to agree to a Federal System. We will ensure a just and fair solution to all communities," the Prime Minister said.

"We will start the peace process after the election," Wickremesinghe said and called up on the people to give a resounding victory to the UNP at the April 2 election.

"Though the Freedom Alliance says they will start negotiations with the LTTE, the LTTE has refused to talk with them as they do not have a clear policy to solve the problem," Wickremesinghe said.

He said during the first two years, his Government laid the foundation to achieve a permanent solution to the ethnic problem. If we can find a solution the ethnic problems, resolving of other problems of the country is not difficult," he said.

"The cost of living, inflation, interest rates and unemployment increased and development work was brought to total standstill after 1994. As a result the economy faced a total breakdown. But we revitalised the economy after 2001," the Prime Minister added.

"During the first two years, we laid the foundation for peace and economic recovery. We could have reaped benefits from the economic development and the peace process if Parliament was not dissolved, Wickremesinghe said.

"The people have another chance at the April 2 General Election to give us a clear and strong mandate to carry out the unfinished work," the Prime Minister said.
