Investigation launched into Kelanitissa fire

AES Kelanitissa (Private) Limited Company yesterday said that it was launching an investigation into the causes of the fire at its power plant at Kelanitissa on March 22, which has resulted in the Plant's shutdown for an undetermined period.

AES Kelanitissa at this time doesn't believe that the fire was an act of terrorism and we are fully co-operating with the local law enforcement to complete their own investigation, a media release by the company Project Director Dave Warden stated.

The company reported that there were no injuries and that the fire was brought under control and extinguished within 1 1/2 hours.

AES Kelanitissa is immensely gratified to the local fire fighters for responding with speed to bring the fire under control, the release added.

AES Kelanitissa (Private) Ltd. is working closely with the Ceylon Electricity Board to see if it is possible from technical, commercial and contractual viewpoint to return the gas turbine (108 Mw), which seems not damaged during the fire, into service.

AES Kelanitissa is a 163 Megawatt diesel fuel based combined cycle power plant supplying power to the Ceylon Electricity Board under long-term contract. AES Kelanitissa is a majority-owned subsidiary of the US-based AES Corporation, a leading global power company", the release stated.
