Use power sparingly - CEB

The Ceylon Electricity Board yesterday requested electricity consumers to assist its endeavour to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity by using existing supplies sparingly. The Board also requested all industrial and commercial institutions to extend its support by disengaging from the CEB grid for a limited period and switching over to their own private generators to produce their electricity.

The CEB in a press release issued yesterday said the country is facing a severe drinking water and electricity crisis due to the severe drought. Moreover a 163 megawatt thermal plant belonging to A.E.S. Private Company which supplied electricity to the CEB was destroyed in a fire on March 22.

The water level in the hydro reservoirs in the hill country have been reduced to a bare minimum due to the prevailing drought. Electricity produced by hydro plants had to be limited since this water had to be preserved to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supplies.

The CEB said industrial and commercial firms are requested to disengage from the national grid and depend on their private generators to produce their electricity for some time. Street lamps also should be used to the minimum and air conditioners should be used only where extremely necessary.
