Srimani relieved at prompt action

"I am relieved that prompt action has been taken and the glaring irregularities exposed for the first time, states Ms. Lalith Athulathmudali in a letter to the Daily News referring to the yesterday's front page lead story 'Great Mahapola Trust Fund Swindle'.

Ms. Athulathmudali in her letter states:

"I read with interest the lead story in the Ceylon Daily News and Dinamina of 23rd March 2004, exposing the alleged 'Great Mahapola Trust Fund Swindle'. In fact I had come to know sometime ago that everything was not well with the Trust Fund and I addressed a letter to HE the President expressing my concern and requesting her to probe what was happening.

I am relieved that prompt action has been taken and the glaring irregularities exposed for the first time. I hope that the vigilance shown by the students will ultimately result in saving the Fund, which was set up by my late husband Lalith Athulathmudali for the sole benefit of University students.

Having read of the proliferation of Mahapola staff and the Fancy salaries that are being paid to them I was reminded of the steps taken by my late husband to build up the Fund, himself setting the example for instance of insisting on buying an admission ticket to enter the Mahapola Fair premises and thereby making sure that all others followed his example.

He also indicated that overtime and other fringe benefits be discouraged and that work for the Mahapola be considered as a labour of love. I am appalled to learn about the creation of senior posts and the fancy salaries that are now said to be paid to senior staff of the Management of the Fund built with such sacrifice and dedication by my late husband and his pioneer band of staff.

I thank those who took the initiative to probe the alleged abuses and look forward to seeing, before long, tangible results in bringing the miscreants to book".
