Second Indian private airline flies to Lanka

By Shirajiv Sirimane

Jet Air of India became the second Indian private airline operator to fly to Colombo from India.

Their inaugural flight arrived from Chennai yesterday.

CEO Jet airways Wolfgang Prock said that this was their first international destination and the airline is planning to expand their international network to other South Asian countries soon. Phase two of their operation would include direct flights to Bangalore and Mumbai within the next two months.

He said that they would be promoting Sri Lankan shoppers to India and Indian travellers and MICE tourism to Sri Lanka. The airline combined with their General Sales Agents in Sri Lanka, John Keells and Walkers Tours would also promote special travel packages.

He said that the airline flies nearly 17 million people annually and with the Sri Lanka operation the number would increase.

The fares of the airline would be very competitive. The next generation Boeing 737 aircraft would be used for the Colombo flights and the airline has upgraded their in-flight and ground staff services to meet international standards.

Jet Airways currently operates a fleet of aircraft and has carried 42.1 million people since their inauguration in 1993.

Jet Airways, the largest private domestic airline in India touched down in Colombo yesterday. Jet Airways flies to 40 destinations throughout the country. The airline operates 42 aircraft, consisting mostly of Boeing 737s.

Today Jet Airways operates over 255 flights daily to 41 destinations across the country.

The rapid expansion of our route network has earned us the prestigious Air Transport World Award 2001 for Market Development and the "TTG Travel Award 2002" for Best Domestic Airline. It was the first airline in India to receive the World Travel Market Global Award, the world's premier global travel event in London.

The airline also won the prestigious H&FS Domestic Airline of the Year Award four times, he said.

Jet Airways was set up in 1993, with the objective of becoming the most preferred domestic airline in the country by providing high quality and reliable air travel in India. It claims a market share of over 46% (estimated 2002-2003).
