49th Battle of Mangosteens : Both teams ready to play positively

by Kalutara group correspondent

The 46th Battle of Mangosteen between Kalutara Vidyalaya and Tissa MMV will be played on March 26 and 27 at Kalutara Esplanade with play commencing at 9.45 a.m. on each day. Battle of Mangosteens is the oldest cricket match in the Kalutara District which has commenced in the late 1950's.

Out of the 45 encounters played so far, Kalutara Vidyalaya has won 17, while Tissa MMV has won six and the rest 22 encounters have ended draws. The Kalutara Vidyalaya has a good history for cricket at school level and has also produced some outstanding cricketers in recent past to the national team.

Dulip Liyanage, Malinga Bandara, Ruwan Sanjeewa and the latest star being Thilakaratne Dilshan are some of the cricketers who have represented the country with distinction. Cricket lovers from far distance areas flock on these two days to witness good cricket at Kalutara. This season both these schools played their Lemonade Trophy tournament matches. Both teams look forward to play positive cricket with the hope of having a result. A result was not witnessed by any team for the last 20 years.

This year's game should be an interesting encounter as both teams are eager to have a result.

Kalutara Vidyalaya is led by Nadira Nawala who has lot of experience as a fifth year coloursman. He has played five matches and scored over 400 runs which includes a century and three half centuries. Kalutara Vidyalaya will no doubt depend heavily on his experience which he got playing for Sri Lanka under 19 in the junior World Cup.

The Vice Captain of the team is Nadisha Siriwardana, a third year player and is one of the leading allrounders. He played 13 matches and scored 340 runs including 3 half centuries.

Alankara Asanka Shriyan Captains Tissa MMV team. A fifth year coloursman should be able to master his team to give a good performance in this game. Shriyan has three centuries to his credit this season and amassed 630 runs. His top score was 163 runs.

A fourth year player Upul Senaka is the leading allrounder in the side, taking 52 wickets from nine matches this season with his medium pace bowling.
