Give strong mandate to Freedom Alliance, says Patriotic National Movement

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Patriotic National Movement (PNM) yesterday urged voters to give a strong mandate to the Freedom Alliance to form a stable Government in the South to prevent the formation of a puppet Government in collaboration with the LTTE.

"We will guide a Freedom Alliance Government towards the correct path and act with dedication to turn this goal into reality," Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera told a media briefing. He said: "International forces are making various attempts to divide the Southern vote base with the intention of forming a weak Government. Therefore, we request the public to vote for the Freedom Alliance to form a strong government in the South."

The Thera said this will be the most decisive election to be held after 1948.

This election will decide the country's future and that of its children. The formation of a strong Government in the South will provide room to overcome the problems in the South as well as in the North, he said.

Meanwhile, the PNM with the assistance of legal experts is formulating a law to enable people to take legal action against politicians who fail to fulfil pledges given to the public. The PNM has emphasised that the Freedom Alliance Government should take immediate measures to implement the recommendations of the Presidential Commission on Buddhism. The Freedom Alliance has already pledged to implement this commission, the Thera said.

This committee report has clearly stated that the political parties should not give party membership to Buddhist monks or give them nominations to contest for any elections. Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera said the PNM will present a special memorandum to Freedom Alliance leaders at a ceremony at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on March 25 at 3.00 pm.

This report has submitted several key proposals which the Freedom Alliance should give utmost priority to defeat conspiracies launched by various foreign elements to divide the nation and destroy the culture, he added.
