Consider track record and conduct of candidates when electing them - Dr. Sarath Amunugama

More than half a century since independence, we Sri Lankans cannot be content with what has been achieved at the time we stepped into the 21st century. When compared with countries such as India, Malaysia and China, we cannot be truly optimistic. When those countries attained independence they were not as much ahead as our country.

However, it is shocking to note the tragic state our country is presently in when compared with the rapid development of those countries.

This unfortunate situation has resulted from the narrow-minded actions of certain politicians. They act as honest people in the public eye and engage in all sorts of corrupt activities as if nation's wealth was their legacy.

Some of those politicians entered politics with no assets but they now possess large houses, luxury vehicles and lands. They even educate their children overseas. People speak of these unpleasant events with disgust and contempt. The people of the country are fed up with politics because of the nefarious actions of certain politicians. Therefore, it is our responsibility to cast our valuable vote for candidates with an excellent track record.

So said Dr. Sarath Amunugama, former Minister of Eduction and Higher Eduction, Vice President of UPFA, Presidential Advisor and Kandy District UPFA candidate addressing meetings held in Udunuwara and Yatinuwara.

He further said that the UPFA will usher in a government that will protect national assets, eschew violence, corruption and bribery, while maintaining a noble political order.

"Financial and managerial discipline will be maintained and the misuse of resources will be prevented. Sustainable projects that will push forward the development of the country will be implemented. Small and medium scale industries of the country will be developed and a system will be introduced to gradually uplift the agricultural sector.

Irrigation systems will be rehabilitated and the road network will be expanded for today's needs. The estate sector economy will be strengthened.

Anti-social and underworld activities will be halted and the non-aligned policy will be revived. When progressive steps are taken, elements disloyal to the country have to be confronted. We have the strength required to defeat those forces. The aim of H.E. the President, and UPFA leaders is to create a peaceful society and better living conditions for the future generation, Amunugama said.

"If we expect politicians to be of service to the country, it is necessary to appoint those with good conduct, irrespective of the party.

It has to be emphasised that this is necessary for the country's well-being", he said. The people's cry is for a righteous government. We have to dedicate ourselves towards achieving this goal. Otherwise we will be betraying the country and its people.

A UPFA Government will assure peace and co-operation among people. The responsibility of putting an end to present political disorder is also with UFPA. The UFPA has the dedication, commitment and strategy needed for that. We will take action to defeat foreign influence, while preserving the territorial integrity and independence of the country.

If we blindly follow those who do not care about these important aspects, the entire nation and the country's future will face a great disaster", he said.
