News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Freedom Alliance charges :'Front Page' front for UNP The Freedom Alliance Media Unit yesterday charged the Presenter of the "Front Page "TV" programme on Swarnavahini TV network, Bandula Padmakumara of using the Sri Lanka Telecom funded programme to the benefit of the United National Party by maliciously depicting news items on newspapers to throw mud at the Freedom Alliance and mostly on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Chairman of the FA Media Unit, Nandana Gunatilleke and its Secretary Susil Premjayanth in a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of SLT, S. Anan have identified Padmakumara as a well-known UNP supporter totally biased towards the UNF election campaign. They have described the conduct of Padmakumara in presenting this programme as a violation of fundamental media ethics and election law. The FA Media Unit has accused Padmakumara of running through the entire pages of the newspaper when the programme was only meant to speak on the front page."This is an malicious attempt to depict news items detrimental to the interests of the Freedom Alliance",the letter had spotlighted. Following is the full test of the letter sent to Anan; You may be aware of the daily Swarnavahini telecast of so-called "Front Page" at 7.30 a.m. this programme is supposed to be a programme to inform the public on the day's news from the front page of all National newspapers. SLT is the sponsor of this programme and the presentation is done by Mr. Bandula Padmakumara, who is a well-known UNP supporter. We have information that SLT is expending millions to sponsor this programme. During last three weeks we have observed that this programme is being used extensively by Mr. Bandula Padmakumara through Swarnavahini to throw mud at the UPFA, and mostly on Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga the President of Sri Lanka. This programme is supposed only to peruse the Front Page of the newspapers but Mr. Padmakumara runs right through the newspaper and maliciously depicts only such news that are totally biased towards to UNF election campaign. This is a violation of fundamental media ethics on one hand, and election law on the other. In the light of the above, we the United Peoples Freedom Alliance, appeal to you to stop the misuse of said programme. |
