SLTA receives Rs. 5m bonanza from Aggreko

Power Company, Aggreko, has again stepped forward to support Sri Lanka tennis with a whopping Rs. 5 million sponsorship package, the biggest ever to come Sri Lanka Tennis' way.

Patrick O'Driscoll, Director Aggreko, handed over the sponsorship cheque to Arjan Perera, SLTA vice president, at a simple ceremony held in the Green Path Tennis Headquarters last week. "We are aware of SLTA's efforts to develop tennis at every level, especially at grass roots.

We are aware of its popular mini tennis program, which we understand is aimed at taking tennis to the outstation regions. This is a noble and admirable venture. Obviously, other development projects too have to be undertaken if tennis is to be made a national sport, which I am told is the ambition of the SLTA, said O'Driscoll. "Aggreko is delighted to be associated with these development efforts of the Association.

SLTA's vice president Arjan Perera said that the Aggreko sponsorship would be invested wholly on the development of tennis players. "The SLTA presently has two overseas professional coaches, one handling the outstation development work and the other the Colombo players.

As well, the SLTA has to ensure that outstanding players are given as much competitive experience as possible - and this means sending them overseas. Development is expensive business, and Aggreko's support is greatly appreciated by the SLTA. Their contribution is going to be help us immensely," said Perera.

Aggreko has been a generous benefactor of Sri Lanka. In 2002 the value of its sponsorship was nearly Rs. 800,000, including Rs. 300,000 towards participation of the Sri Lanka tennis team at Asian Games in South Korea. In 2003, Aggreko put up Rs. 2 million for SLTA's outstation development project, as well as Rs. 1.5 million into the country's preparation for the Davis Cup competition.

It has also sponsored the SLTA's website since inception in 2002. Last week's Rs. 5 million represents the biggest sponsorship to come the way of the SLTA. "The SLTA is really fortunate to have good friend in Aggreko. It is our turn to give something back to them by producing champions in international tennis, which after all is what development is about".
