by Anjana Gamage The one day token strike last Wednesday by the non-academic staff of all universities due to the failure to pay the Rs. 1,150 interim allowance with their salary is likely to lead to a strong strike action, sources told the Daily News yesterday. The decision to go ahead for a trade union action will be followed up at the scheduled discussions during the weekend Inter-University Trade Unions Federation (IUTUF), members' President Lionel Malwattage said. He said according to the collective agreement University Grants Commission (UGC) authorities had pledged to implement the new salary structure by January 1. "But so far, they have failed to do it. The authorities had also decided to withdraw the Rs. 1,000 interim allowance from December 31 last year. But after the discussions with UGC officials on December 31, they verbally agreed that it should be paid. But nothing has happened so far, Malwattage said. He said the UGC officials failed to resolve the issue of salary anomalies in January and now postponed it to May. "We will resort to continued strike action till our demands are met," Malwattage said. According to IUTUF sources, the collective agreement between the university authorities and the inter-university trade unions approved a stipulated salary increase once in three years. However this increase had not been granted since 1995, they said. Academic activities in 11 universities was badly affected last Wednesday following the token strike by the 9,000 strong non-academic staff of all universities. |
