M. V. Theagarajah will assume duties as Chairman of the Browns Group of Companies, while Roshani Cooray will succeed Theagarajah as Deputy Chairman of the Group, the Browns Group of Companies said. This is following the death of Chairman J. Chrisantha Cooray. Theagarajah joined the Browns Group of Companies in 1962 as a Senior Executive. He thereafter served as the Group Cost Accountant, Group Financial Accountant, Director of Subsidiaries and Group Financial Director. Thegarajah was the first Sri Lankan to become the finance director in the Browns Group. He was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Group in 1979. Theagarajah has served under four Chairmen of the Browns Group, G. Grey, Edmund Cooray, Lester Cooray and J. Chrisantha R. Cooray. Theagarajah is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Institute of Management and the Institute of Directors. He has held honorary positions in various private, public and government establishments. Thearagajah received his training in Management Accounting under V. Gould (MBA, Harvard), the London Transport Board and Associated Electrical Industries which now forms part of GEC, one of the electrical giants of Great Britain. Theagarajah is the longest serving Director of the Hatton National Bank and serves on the Boards of 16 other companies. Roshani Cooray joined the Browns Group of Companies as Director Operations Development. Cooray obtained a MBA from the University of Bath in the UK consequent to acquiring a BSc in Applied Economics and Business Management from the Cornell University, New York, USA. She is a Chartered Marketer and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK. Browns is a highly diversified group of companies engaging in entrepreneurial business activities involving the marketing sales and distribution of prestigious products from leading international manufacturers. The company's diverse business activities embrace consumer electronics, agricultural machinery and implements, batteries, office automation products, power generators, hardware, pharmaceuticals, travel and tours etc. The Browns Group has consistently managed to move with the times, while retaining its rich heritage of over 125 years. |
