The General Convocation of the University of Moratuwa was held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on Thursday. For his academic accomplishments and development contributed to the University, a Honorary Doctorate was conferred on Prof. G. T. Francis de Silva who succeeded the assassinated Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. C. Pathuwathavithane. Prof. de Silva delivered the Convocation Address. The Chancellor said that despite various financial constraints and delays on decision making beyond the control of the University of Moratuwa, continuous physical and academic development took place since the last Convocation held in April, 2003. 'Undergraduate student numbers have increased 5% with the total number of undergraduate students currently at the University of Moratuwa being 4,000. During the year a new undergraduate degree programme in Town and Country Planning has commenced. While undergraduate education continued on state funded non fee levying basis, there was a great demand for the post graduate courses and short courses on a fee levying basis which in turn directly helped the development of the non fee levying courses and the development of the University, the Chancellor said. During the year three new postgraduate courses namely MBA in infrastructure, MSc/PG Diploma in Computer Science and MSc/PG Diploma in Information Technology had commenced with the total of 31 postgraduate courses at the University now being conducted. |
