Cast your vote early, says IGP

by Sarath Malalasekera

IGP Indra de Silva yesterday urged voters to "go to polls early on April 2 in order to avoid any inconvenience".

"This is my sincere advice to all voters who are eligible to vote at the General Election," the IGP told the media at the Police Headquarters.

The entire police force of nearly 64,000 have been deployed for election duties.

During the election period, there will be 8,290 road blocks, 2,800 counting centres, 5,993 Police units countrywide and 19,380 police force for VIPs including the President and the Prime Minister. These police arrangements will be in force from March 30, the IGP said.

According to the Police Headquarters Election Secretariat, the law enforcing officers had done an excellent job, controlling crime compared to previous elections. There were no major incidents.

If the police refuses to entertain any complaints, the public could obtain assistance from the Gramasevaka, Police Commission, Human Rights Commission and Election Observers to make their complaints.

Answering the media, the IGP said that police duties in Killinochchi, Paranthan and Mullaitivu areas will be decided on March 25 after consulting Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake.

The IGP paid a tribute to the media for their assistance and appealed to them to continue with the good work and assist the police in future to conduct free and fair election.

Earlier, IGP de Silva issued a communication to officers-in-charge of all police stations in the country to prepare a comprehensive list of all known law breakers in their respective areas in order to combat rising crime.

"If any of these known law breakers commit a crime in another area, the OIC in that area is responsible for the act along with the OIC of the area where the known law breaker was living," the IGP said.

Several Police Communication Centres linked to the Police Headquarters and Information Divisions have been set up throughout the country to alert Police stations and other relevant units to apprehend any criminals fleeing after committing murders, robberies and other serious crimes.

The public can help apprehend criminals by providing information about their movements to the IGP's Information Unit or any of these Communication Centres through the phone promptly.

Informants are free to identify themselves or maintain anonymity.

Police will consider such information strictly confidential and keep their identity strictly confidential, the IGP said.
