Colombo Engineering excels in maritime related repairs by Sarath Malalasekera The Greekowned bulk carrier, "Marilia" recently experienced a total black out at sea in international waters due to all its three generators packing up in quick succession. The ship's owners immediately contacted their local agents Allied Shipping Agencies at Colombo for the required facilities for repair in Sri Lanka. The local agent of the ship immediately contacted Kiran Atapattu, the head of the Colombo Engineering who confirmed that the repair could be handled at Colombo, directed the ship owners to bring their ship to Colombo. The "Marilia" was towed to Colombo with the help of a salvage tug. Colombo Engineering immediately placed a huge generator weighing about five metric tons on board the vessel and provided continuous 635 kva generator power right round the clock. Due to the mishap at sea, all the cold rooms of the ship were also damaged and Colombo Engineering overnight repaired the meat, fish and vegetable cold rooms to provide food for the ship crew. All three generators of the ship were repaired whilst at Colombo outside harbour and the ship sailed off satisfied with the services provided in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan companies like Colombo Engineering owned by Kiran Atapattu have shown to the International Shipping World that Sri Lanka has the expertise to handle any tough repair at sea. |
