Govt to collect US $ 8 million from the cess fund

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The government is hoping to collect a revenue of US $ 8 million per year from the newly introduced one percent cess levy for the Travel and Aviation industry, which came to effect from January 1.

This includes the increased airport tax of Rs. 500.

President United Federation Travel Agents Association, Udaya Nanayakkara speaking at the awarding ceremony of Travel Agents Association's Tourism Certified Course last week said that the local Aviation industry is still among the young generation.

The Human Resourse Development has been identified as a key area for which 15% percent had been allocated from the cess fund.

Plans have also been made to restructure the Ceylon Hotels School and introduce more education courses for the airline industry.

He said that a Board of Directors which would include members from the Hotels Corporation, Tour Operators and the Travel Agents Association of Sri Lanka (TAASL) and the government, would be appointed to manage this money.

The SriLankan airlines Maldives and Sri Lanka Manager Ranil Wagiswara said that there is big demand for professionals in the aviation industry. The industry is picking up and this demand would increase in the future.

The President of the TAASL, Nihal Perera said that this certificate is the first step towards producing professionals for the aviation industry which is a long felt need. Most of the students receive job opportunities during the four-month course. Many employees in the airline industry in Sri Lanka migrate overseas and he appealed from the students to serve the country for at least a decade.

The Course was conduced in association with Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Abacus Global Distributors.

Senior professionals in the industry conducted lectures. The certificates would be recognized internationally.
