News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNF harassed members of poor families after the last general election - Jayaratne Herath Kurunegala north group correspondent The newly formed Freedom Alliance will achieve a resounding victory with more than 110 seats at the forthcoming general election even without the support of political parties led by the leader of the Muslim Congress or any other party and this government under the very able guidance of the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will stabilise peace and harmony in the country, said Jayaratne Herath former parliamentarian addressing a meeting of the Freedom Alliance held at Rotgalle, Kurunegala. He said due to the violence which erupted after the last general election, those members of families in the Kurunegala electorate who became victims of UNP violence found refuge at Wanduragala area under his security. He said that this time the SLFP-JVP Alliance will win at the election, but we will not harass any UNF supporter. Herath further said that he had given all necessary instructions to his party supporters to this effect and instead we will win the Kurunegala electorate with a large majority in a peaceful environment. He called for a clear mandate from the people at the forthcoming general election to initiate discussions with the LTTE and the relevant parties to the ethnic question and end it through a political solution. |
