Minister prevents police action - says Alliance candidate

A Freedom Alliance candidate for Matara district Jinadasa Kithulagoda has alleged that political pressure exerted by Minister Mahinda Wijesekera has prevented police in the Matara district from implementing election laws in a fair and impartial manner.

A JVP release said that according to Kithulagoda, a group led by Minister Wijesekera had allegedly distributed scurrilous literature ridiculing Freedom Alliance leaders in Weligama town on March 12.

When a person went to the police station to lodge a complaint against it around 10 a.m. the police had allegedly made him to wait till 7 p.m. to record his statement.

The release said the same scurrilous literature had been distributed in the area again on March 13. On a complaint made by JVP Pradeshiya Sabha member Sujeewa Kumara around 2.30 p.m. on Thursday police had taken six suspects into custody in this connection but a group led by the Minister's brother and the Weligama UC Chairman had arrived at the Weligama police station in vehicles and allegedly got the suspects released by force and taken them away.

Complaint's numbers E1B 31/16 and 20/39 have been lodged at the Weligama police by JVPers in this connection, the release said.
