Alliance leaders make pledge before Maha Sangha

A group led by United People's Freedom Alliance Leaders - Anura Bandaranaike Dinesh Gunawardane, Wimal Weerawansa - gave an solemn pledge before the Maha Sangha at the meeting held at the BMICH on March 12. The pledge given to nearly 2000 (two thousand) assembled members of the Maha Sangha belonging to the Three Nikayas is as follows.

* Sri Lanka, our Motherland should be protected at all times rejecting the division of the country so that there will be national unity based on the concept of equality in Buddhist philosophy with justice and fairplay to all the people of the country, states the National Bhikku front.

* And also fundamentalist forces that have given rise to a great deal of confusion in the country, should be got rid of and religious co-existence where one could follow one's religion freely should be created in place of religious force. Legal provisions against biased and fundamentalist religious invasion, essential for religious co-existence should inserted in a future constitutional amendment.

* We should also organise ourselves to obtain real national Independence consolidating the selfsufficiency foundation of the country by building an indigenous economy with immense dedication giving life within the country to our agricultural economy that is facing destruction.

The aspiration of the people for country replete with moral values should be brought to fruition by enriching the education of our country by our history engendering national feelings and heroism and by our literature helping individual character development and fosterling human qualities transforming this country into one where human qualities are valued and moral values reign supreme with one man having regard for the other by closing the fountains of all forms of vice and by reviving our indigenous culture that has been tragically destroyed".

It was also pledged to protect the valuable national resources and the historical heritage that has astounded the world.
