News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Rosy denies Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronne Fernando responding to a letter sent to him by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga titled "Participation in partisan politics by our diplomats" states that he had inquired from Ms. Rosy Senanayake regarding the concerns raised in the letter and she had denied any involvement in political activities while in Sri Lanka. The President in her letter said she had received reliable information that Ms. Rosy Senanayake, the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Malaysia was currently in Sri Lanka with a group of Malaysian businessmen on leave approved by the Secretary to the Foreign Ministry and was actively engaged in the ongoing election campaign. Fernando said according to Ms.Senanayake she was only accompanying a high level Malaysian Trade delegation visiting Sri Lanka to facilitate organising a trade seminar for Malaysian investors who are interested in Southern Area Development Projects and that preparations for such a seminar was now in progress with the involvement of the Malaysian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka and the Hambantota Chamber. The Minister also states in his letter that leave was approved for Ms. Senanayake for two weeks from March 5 taking into consideration the level of importance Sri Lanka attaches to increasing Sri Lanka-Malaysia economic relations. In conclusion the Minister states if there was any specific evidence pertaining to her alleged involvement in the ongoing political campaign to let him know so that he could pursue the matter. |
