President's Counsel Nehru Goonetilleke passes away

President's Counsel Mr. Nehru Goonetilleke passed away suddenly on March 13, 2004 having suffered a severe heart attack. He was born on the 30th of January, 1935.

His father Mr. P. F. A. Goonetilleke (Proctor) was one of the founder members of the Kalutara Bodhi Trust. His mother Padmaseeli was the sister of former Chief Justice, Mr. Hema Basnayake, QC. He received his education at Royal College, Colombo. He graduated in Law from the University of Ceylon and commenced his practice, making Colombo his base.

Within a short time he reached the helm in his chosen field and became a specialist in Civil Law. In recognition of the vast contribution he has made to uphold the traditions of the legal profession in particular and considerable service, the government of Sri Lanka made him a President's Counsel in the year 1990.

His eminence in the field is amply displayed by the two salient factors,

(a) The islandwide practice he enjoyed up to-date and

(b) By the vast network of legal professionals who solicit his advice and guidance on numerous aspects of the civil law of Sri Lanka.

His dedication to whatever assignment given to him and his eagerness to fulfil it to the best of his ability is much spoken of among his colleagues all over the island.

Whatever time he had for himself he devoted for the development of the numerous institutions that he represented. Among them are the Kalutara Bodhi Trust of which he has been the Chairman for 14 years and a Trustee for 28 years.

He was the Chairman of the Vijayabahu Trust Fund inaugurated by the late Lt. General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and the late high priest of Thanthirimale, Rev. Kudakongaskada Wimalagama Thera, until his death. This fund under his able guidance had a lot of religious and social activities to uplift the living standard of the people of the Rajarata region.

He was also a Governor of the YMBA, Colombo and a Trustee of Musaeus College, Colombo Board of Trustees both offices, which he held until his demise. As an act of gratitude to his services and in recognition of his salient contributions, the Saddhamma Yukkika section of the Amarapura Nikaya made an award of gratitude to him by conferring on him the honorary title of "Sugatha Sasana Pajjothamanna" in April, 2000.

Being a man of simple ways and high integrity every one would remember him with respect and gratitude for his invaluable services to the religion and the country as a whole.

May he attain the supreme bliss of "Nirvana"
