Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander Lt. General Lional Balagalla said yesterday that the Sri Lanka Army had embarked on an ambitious program to computerise the greater part of its administration, logistics and communication. The Army Commander made these observations at the inauguration session of an IT development project for the Sri Lanka Army at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. Lt. General Balagalla said: "We all live in the information age. This is an inescapable fact of life. Information Technology plays a vital role in all spheres of activity be it private, public, professional or social. In the modern world for organisations to develop and thrive, IT can and does play a major role in improving its efficiency, productivity and effectiveness. Advanced information technologies can greatly increase the amount of useful knowledge available to the Army and improve our ability to put that knowledge into constructive use. Combining these technologies with appropriate doctrine and organisational designs will provide for greater productivity. Hence, we must now develop these tools and provide them to various echelons in the Army. Unavoidably the Army has many unique requirements and thus the private sector advancements in the IT sphere does not satisfy our needs all the time. Hence the need for us to work together to understand the effect of IT on the military system and to determine investment and development priorities." Governor of the Southern Province Kingsly T. Wickremaratne, Chairman Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology Prof. S. Karunaratne, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Lalith Gamage, members of the Management Council of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, Senior Officers, Officers and students were present. |
