by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Government doctors decided to continue their strike after a discussion with Finance Minister K.N. Choksy ended unsuccessfully last evening. "The discussion failed to reach any compromise and ended in a stalemate," said a Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) spokesman adding that they have no other alternative but to continue the strike. Last evening's discussion lasted for nearly two hours but failed to make a positive approach towards resolving the current salary anomaly crisis in the health sector. The doctors' strike which commenced last Thursday took a serious turn yesterday as the GMOA stopped all admissions to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital from 12 noon. There will be no admissions to the Colombo North Ragama Hospital from 12 noon today if the authorities fail to take any positive measures to resolve their crisis. The GMOA has requested all patients seeking admission to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital and Ragama Hospitals to go to the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) for treatment. "They can be admitted to the CNH," he said, adding that in-house patients at both these Hospitals will be provided healthcare. Following the doctors' strike, normal services at the Government hospitals had been affected inconveniencing patients. Routine operations and clinical services has already come to a standstill. The islandwide strike does not include Lady Ridgeway, De Zoysa, Castle and Cancer Hospital, Maharagama. The GMOA's general assembly on Friday decided to continue their strike despite Minister Choksy's written assurance to solve their salary anomaly within eight weeks of the opening of the Parliament on April 22. |
