The Supreme Court yesterday instructed its registrar to issue notice on Agriculture Minister S.B Dissanayake to appear in person before the Supreme Court and show cause why he should not be punished for contempt of court. The Supreme Court decision to charge Minister Dissanayake follows certain derogatory references to the Supreme Court reportedly made by him during a speech at a "Vapmagul" ceremony held at Habaraduwa, Galle on November 3, 2003. Following this purported statement by the Minister, the Supreme Court obtained a video tape on its coverage by one of the television crews that covered the event. Subsequently , Chief Justice Sarath N Silva appointed a five member bench of the Supreme Court to examine the contents of the video tape that contained the Minister's speech at Habaraduwa. The five member Bench that viewed the video tape had been satisfied that the derogatory references containing the speech of the Minister tantamount to contempt of Court. The five member Bench had recommended that explanation should be called from the Minister as to why he should not be dealt for contempt of Court. Accordingly the Chief Justice has instructed the registrar of the Supreme Court to issue notice on Minister S.B Dissanayake. |
