CIMA, SLIIT to launch IT Diploma

by Irangika Range

The Sri Lanka Division of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) entered into a strategic alliance with the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) to launch an exclusive Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology for CIMA members.

The CIMA International body in UK will offer the diploma jointly with SLIIT. This will form part of the CIMA's continuous professional development portfolio.

The CIMA Sri Lanka Division President Pravir Samarasinghe said the computer has today become an invaluable tool in the hands of a Business Leader. "CIMA foresaw this and was the first professional body to include Information Technology in its curriculum. This will be an added advantage for CIMA members to gain technology.

The diploma, therefore, will provide an opportunity for members to be at the leading edge in management and business leadership," he said.

"Over 50 percent CIMA members work in the IT and management sector in other countries while over 1,700 CIMA members are in Sri Lanka," he said.

"We began life as the Ceylon Association of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants UK, in 1965. CIMA - Sri Lanka has led the process of equipping aspiring accountants with a cutting edge, international qualification, whilst supporting CIMA graduates with the tools required to enhance their skills and knowledge", he said.

SLIIT Managing Director Dr. Lalith Gamage said it was important for business and management professionals to understand the current emerging technologies and the tools available. "They can utilise them to design, develop and manage the information infrastructure of their organisations to have a competitive advantage", he said.

"The Diploma will cover areas such as Productivity Software, Managing Systems Development, IT for Strategic Planning, Management Concepts for e-business, Design, Development and Management of IT infrastructure and Enterprises Application and Relations Management. The course would be conducted weekly, in three semesters. The duration of the course will be nine months and classes will take place at the SLIIT Metropolitan campus of the BOC Merchant Tower," he said.

Samarasinghe and Dr. Gamage exchanged the MoU, at the Colombo Plaza Hotel recently.

SLIIT is the leading Degree Awarding Institute in the field of Information Technology approved by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act. It was established in 1999 to educate and train Information Technology Professionals required by the fast growing IT Industry in Sri Lanka. At present, the SLIIT has nearly 3,000 registered students.
