Cunard and Seabourn ships to make four calls at Colombo in 2004-05

Luxury cruise ships of Cunard and Seabourn, the world's most famous shipping line, will make four calls at Colombo over the next 12 months, the Delmege Forsyth Group whose subsidiary Lewis Shipping is the exclusive handling agent for Cunard and Seabourn, said this week.

The first of these calls, by the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) - the celebrated 'city-at-sea' - takes place on March 21. This will be followed by two calls by 'Seabourn Spirit' one of Cunard and Seabourn's elite 'Yachts of Seabourn' group of cruise vessels on April 24 and December 1, a spokesman for Lewis Shipping said.

The QE2 is scheduled to return to Colombo on March 19, in the course of her next world cruise, he said.

"These calls by luxury cruise ships carrying some of the world's most affluent tourists reflect the strong commitment of Cunard and Seabourn to Colombo," the spokesman said.

"The Delmege Group which has represented Cunard and Seabourn for several decades, is proud to be associated with this commitment to Sri Lanka."

He said the company also looked forward to some day handling the Queen Mary 2 (QM2), Cunard's US $ 800 million (Rs 78.4 billion) masterpiece now on its maiden cruise. The QM2, which is even larger than the QE2, can accommodate 2,620 passengers and 1253 crew, and at 1,132 feet is as long as 41 London double-decker buses.

The QE2, calling at Colombo on March 21, accommodates 1,700 passengers, while the Seabourn Spirit has a capacity of 208 passengers.

The Delmege Group's involvement in shipping goes back more than 100 years. Besides Cunard and Seabourn, the Group represents Regional Container Lines (RCL) - the largest feeder operator in the South East Asian region, LaFarge, Shell and Inchcape Shipping.

Delmege's shipping sector companies also act as agents for tankers, break-bulk vessels, specialised bulk cement carriers, passenger vessels and naval craft, provide off-shore services to shipping principals and offer specialised handling for project cargoes.
