Thai police bust group trafficking women to Japan BANGKOK, Thursday, (Xinhua) Thai police on Wednesday arrested two members of a group trafficking Thai women to Japan and luring them into prostitution, the local press reported on Thursday. The couple was arrested at a house in Bangkok and charged with procurement and luring women into prostitution. Their arrest followed the escape of five Thai women from Japanese brothels, who sought help from the Thai Embassy in Japan. The women, aged from 18-29, told police the gang based in Bangkok promised them jobs as hostesses in Japan and arranged their trip to Japan, but all of them ended up being prostitutes, according to Bangkok Post. In order to get visas, they were arranged to get married with strange men, who took them to the third country for immigration stamps on the passports and accompanied them to Japan. Three of the women were finally sent to the Japanese port town Nagano and told they were in debt of some 2 million baht (about 47, 619 US dollars) to the owner of a brothel. The other two women.were sent to two other brothels in Tokyo and Nagano. The Thai police are still investigating the case and looking for other members of the gang. A large number of Thai women were trafficked to Japan and some European countries with the promise of better job opportunities and marriage, but most of them were sent to brothels. |
