25th 'Battle of Rocks' at Kurunegala evenly poised

The Silver Jubilee cricket encounter between Maliyadeva and St. Annes, the two leading schools in Kurunegala will be played on Friday and Saturday at Welegedera Stadium commencing at 9.00 a.m. each day.

The 12th limited overs match for the Janaka Bogollagama Challenge Trophy will be played on 14th Sunday at the same venue. Out of 24 Big Matches, Maliyadeva won two and St. Annes none.

In the one day series tally stands in favour of Maliyadeva's 6 wins to St. Annes 5 all. Maliyadeva did well this season playing 15 matches. Out of these matches they recorded three outright wins.

Fourth year player Shalika Karunana-yake leads the Maliyadeva side. Last year he represented the under-15 national team for Sharjah tournament. He was the Vice-captain of the team and also represented the under-17 National team this year for the Asia Cup tournament held in India.

He scored 505 runs and captured 65 wickets this season.Third year player Weranga Dissanayake Vice-captain of the side has scored 558 runs so far.

Sameera de Soysa is the best allrounder of the side who was member of the under-15 Sharjah tournament and Under-17 Asia Cup tournament in 2002 and 2004 is a big asset to the Maliyadeva side. Ranjith Madurasinghe, Eric Upashantha and Rangana Herath are the test cricketers produced by Maliyadeva College.

St. Annes still a unbeaten school side they played 12 matches and recorded five outright wins.

Fifth year coloursman Desapriya Wellalage leads the St. Annes side. Left handed top order stylish batsman scored 450 runs. Last year he was the Best Batsman outstation runner-up at the most popular school boy cricketer Observer/Bata Contest. He toured India in 1998 representing the Kurunegala District team.

Third year player Udesh Perera is the Vice captain of the team. He gives his fullest co-operation to overcome their rivals. So far he has scored 500 runs.

A positive player always fight to the last ball of the game is an asset to the Annites team. His best score is 134 not out against Jayawardenapura M.V., Kotte.
