Assistant Elections Commissioner K. Senanayake told the Daily News last night that the Commissioner was yet to take decision to have cluster polling booths either in the no-mans areas or at the entry points to Government controlled areas. "The Commissioner will soon decide on this and on the number of cluster polling booths to facilitate voting for the people in the uncleared areas," he added. Senanayake said the Elections Department cannot have polling booths in uncleared areas under the supervision of independent election monitors, as requested by the LTTE and other political parties as it was compulsory to have Police protection for these polling booths. A number of political parties including the Tamil National Alliance and the UNP made a strong request from Dissanayake to have polling booths in uncleared areas to make the April 2 polls a free and fare one. |
